Iran’s Intelligence Ministry said Saturday that its agents have arrested a person of Iranian origin on suspicion of spying for the United States, the Associated Press said. Iran's Foreign Ministry taunted the US Saturday, saying any espionage activity against his country would lead to humiliation.

In a statement broadcast on state TV, the ministry said that Iran’s secret services had previously identified the suspect at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan – the main base for American and other international forces outside Kabul.

“The individual was put under the watch of Iran’s intelligence and was being pursued after crossing into our country and arrested simultaneously as he began his espionage mission,” the statement said.

The suspect was not identified by name.

AP further quoted the official statement as saying that the man sought to infiltrate Iran’s secret services and funnel false information to deceive Iranian intelligence. The attempted infiltration was allegedly "part of a complicated intelligence battle the U.S. has launched against Iran."

Iran claimed the suspect has served in the U.S. Army’s intelligence units and spent time at U.S. military bases in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast said that "the recent arrest of the CIA agent in Iran proved to U.S. officials that any espionage operation against the Islamic Republic would make them suffer humiliation."

In an interview for the Nasim news agency quoted by the Tehran Times, he added that "The recent downing of the U.S. spy drone and the arrest of the CIA-linked spy illustrate the supremacy of Iran’s intelligence apparatus over the enemies."
