Dozens injured as bus overturns in Binyamin

A bus carrying 50 passengers overturned between Kokhav Hashahar and Migdalim.

A bus carrying dozens of passengers overturned on Thursday morning between Kokhav Hashahar and Migdalim in the Binyamin region of Samaria.

Rescue forces and Hatzalah medics were deployed to the scene to aid the 50 or so passengers believed to have been on board.

The bus driver was apparently speeding prompting the major accident.

A total of 42 people were treated at the scene, including a 19-year-old female soldier who was declared dead at the scene. One person was seriously injured, three people moderately wounded and 37 others were treated for light bruises and cuts.

Two air force helicopters were also dispatched to the scene to help evacuate the wounded to nearby hospitals.

The seriously injured victim was brought to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, while the three moderately injured passengers and seven of those lightly wounded were evacuated to Tel HaShomer Hospital in Ramat Gan.

The rest of the lightly injured passengers were taken by MDA ambulances to Jerusalem-area hospitals. So far, 12 people have arrived at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in the capital.

Hatzalah medic Menachem Leff recounted the scene: "A bus overturned into a ditch alongside the road. Most of the injured are fully conscious and were able to exit the bus on their own. There were a number of other people trapped inside the bus."

"With the assistance of other Hatzalah volunteers, we provided primary medical care to the victims. Firefighting teams helped rescue the trapped passengers."

Route 458 has been blocked to traffic from Gideon Junction to Migdalim Junction.
