Turkish police on Sunday evening killed an Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist who tried to murder a police officer with a knife in Istanbul, the Daily Sabah reported.

The attack took place in a police station in the city. The terrorist was in custody at the time, according to the Turkish newspaper.

The wounded police officer was transferred to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his wounds.

The name of the attacker has not been released by authorities.

ISIS terrorists have carried out various attacks in Turkey in recent years. A major attack took place during New Year's celebrations at an Istanbul nightclub. 39 people were murdered in that attack.

In the days following the Istanbul attack, Turkish police detained almost 450 suspected ISIS members around the country.
