U.S. forces killed dozens of Islamic State (ISIS) members in a strike on Monday on two training camps in Yemen, the Pentagon said, according to Reuters.

The camps in al-Bayda province were being used to train new fighters using AK-47s, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenade launchers, the Pentagon said in a statement.

ISIS has used ungoverned areas in Yemen to plot, direct, instigate, resource and recruit for attacks against America and its allies around the world, it added.

Last year, the leader of ISIS in Yemen was killed in a drone strike between the towns of Zinjibar and Shaqra in southern Yemen.

In the past, the U.S. has also targeted Al-Qaeda's Yemen branch. The two groups are battling one another for prominence and dominance of the area in southern Yemen.

In June, a U.S. air strike killed Abu Khattab al-Awlaqi, who was the emir for Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) in Shabwa.

Washington considers Al-Qaeda's Yemen-based branch to be its most dangerous and has conducted a long-running drone war against its leaders.
