German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier addressed the families of Israeli athletes murdered at the Munich Olympics in 1972 at a memorial service marking the tragedy. "I am grateful that you are here today. Without the relatives and without the presence of the State of Israel, I could not imagine a dignified commemoration. I thank everyone who during the last few weeks worked to make it possible to hold a joint ceremony today," he told members of the audience.
