Bedouin woman in NegevBedouins Attacks DJ for Western Music

Negev police arrested two Bedouin men after they severely beat up a disc jockey who played Western music at a wedding. The offending music encouraged women to dance in a way that guests felt was lewd.

As the women responded exuberantly to the beat of the British electronic duet Pet Shop Boys, the DJ refused demands by Bedouin men that he return to playing traditional Arabic music.

The offended men among hundreds of guests at the wedding attacked the disc jockey, causing serious injuries.

The incident took place at the village of Aro'er, south of Arad and east of Be’er Sheva. One of the guests told the Hebrew-language Ma'ariv newspaper, "The fact that women were dancing at the wedding goes against tradition and is a dishonor to their husbands."

Men and women at traditional Bedouin weddings celebrate in totally separate areas for the first part of the ceremony, and often remain in separate groups, or at least dance separately, although in the same area, for the second and final part of the celebration. Those groups who have begun to allow mixed dancing are considered to be more "modern" and are often criticized by more religious Muslims.
