A large force of firefighters put out a blaze that erupted Sunday near the community of Mevaseret on the western outskirts of Jerusalem. The fire spread eastward toward Route 1 (the Jerusalem – Tel Aviv highway), Route 9 and the memorial for the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks, in Arazim Valley. About 45 Jewish National Fund workers, five JNF fire trucks, fire-fighting planes and large forces from the fire brigades managed to get the fire under control after several hours and to prevent it from affecting traffic in the nearby roads. The fire consumed about 75 acres of natural forest land and open spaces.
