Dozens of security guards were stationed Sunday aboard buses and aside public transportation stations in Jerusalem. Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud) inaugurated the new security unit, stressing its purpose was to prevent terror attacks - a praiseworthy accomplishment. "The preparations and correct operations of the security guards can minimize the [terrorist] threat as well as prevent it," he said. Katz told the guards that "we are entrusting into your hands the security of Jerusalem. No task is more important. I'm certain you will do a good job." "We are replacing IDF soldiers with civilian security guards to ensure the safety of passengers on public transport in the city," Katz added. "We remember the period of difficult attack and we will do everything not to return to that." The security unit will include in its first phase 300 security guards, former combat soldiers, and dozens of special mobile units, who will patrol major traffic arteries, between bus and light rail stations as well aboard buses during all hours of operations." The guards are to be equipped with special uniforms, weapons, walkie-talkies, and special identification papers from the Israel Police authorizing them to carry out body and luggage searches on passengers and bystanders. They may also detain individuals who arouse suspicion. The new security unit will carry both both overt and covert operations.
