Prime Minister Yair Lapid has just held a situational assessment with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Security Council regarding the activity of the Jewish Agency in Russia.
It was decided to send a joint delegation from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration to ensure the continuation of the Jewish Agency’s activity in Russia.
Prime Minister Lapid also discussed the issue with Aliyah and Integration Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata. An additional inter-agency discussion will be held on Sunday.
Prime Minister Lapid said: “The Jewish community in Russia is deeply connected with Israel. Its importance arises in every diplomatic discussion with the Russian leadership. We will continue to act through diplomatic channels so that the Jewish Agency’s important activity will not cease.”
The Russian Justice Ministry has requested that a local court order the liquidation of the Jewish Agency, the Russian news agency Interfax reported Thursday.
The request was submitted to the Basmanny District Court of Moscow, and would disband the organization which facilitates Jewish immigration to Israel.
A hearing is expected on the issue next week.
