Russian politician Leonid Gozman, who is an opposition figure against President Putin, was arrested today by the Russian police after he did not report to the country's authorities that he had received an Israeli passport and was an Israeli citizen.
Gozman is known for being an opposition figure against President Vladimir Putin and the Russian war in Ukraine. Guzman was arrested in one of the subway stations in Moscow.
Gozman had informed Russian authorities of his dual citizenship, but the Interior Ministry claims that he did not do so within the timeframe required by the law.
His lawyer, Mikhail Biryukov, stated that the reason for the arrest is that he did not report to the authorities in time about receiving an Israeli passport for himself and his wife. His lawyer reported that Gozman was released from custody.
Officials in Russia estimate that the reason for the arrest is not related to receiving the passport, since Gozman was issued the passport several years ago and immediately reported it to the authorities.
According to the sources, the arrest was made against the background of Gozman's views against Putin and the war in Ukraine.
The law in Russia requires its citizens to inform the authorities about any foreign citizenship or resident status they hold in addition to Russian citizenship. If Guzman is convicted in court, his punishment may be a fine or community service.
