Forty people were injured in a traffic accident on one of Israel's busiest highways Tuesday.

A 10-year-old girl was seriously injured in an accident between a bus transporting children and a truck that occurred on Highway 1 near Latrun Interchange. Thirty-nine others suffered moderate or light injuries.

MDA and United Hatzalah first responders were dispatched to the scene, treating the victims before evacuating them to Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, and Assaf HaRofeh Medical Center.

Police closed off eastbound Route 1 to traffic at the Latrun Junction.

United Hatzalah volunteer paramedic Liad Ohana, who was at the scene of the accident, said: "We provided initial treatment to a girl who sat in the front of the bus and was seriously injured, to the bus driver who sustained moderate injuries, and to additional children who were lightly injured. United Hatzalah ambulances transported several of the children to the hospital for further treatment. Due to the nature of the incident, the Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit was dispatched and treated numerous children for emotional and psychological shock."
