A video by Yisrael Hirsch, a haredi man serving in the IDF legal corps, from the central Israeli city of Hod HaSharon, went viral recently, after he was confronted during a recent bus ride by a secular woman who accused him of not serving in the army. Hirsch, an IDF reservist and former soldier, pushed back on the criticism, asking the woman why she assumed he had not served, and accused her of discrimination. "Why do you jump to the conclusion that I didn't serve in the army? Because I'm wearing a yarmulke and a white shirt?" When the woman answered in the affirmative, Hirsch said: "You cannot go around judging people by their appearance." "You need to go to the army, just like my brothers did," the woman responded. "I did go to the army, and I bet I went for longer than you," Hirsch retorted. "I am a captain in the army reserves." When the woman asked him why he wears a yarmulke if he served, Hirsch said that "it is my faith, and my right. It is unbelievable that every time I ride on a bus in Hod HaSharon - the city where I live - I get hassled like this."
