White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) over her use of the phrase "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free," a call for the destruction of the State of Israel.
"As it relates to that term, we've been very clear we strongly disagree," Jean-Pierre told reporters today (Wednesday).
“I’ve seen some of those statements this weekend,” she said.. “We’re going to continue to be very clear: We believe they are wrong, we believe they’re repugnant, and we believe they’re disgraceful.
“Our condemnation belongs squarely with terrorists who have brutally murdered, raped, kidnapped hundreds — hundreds of Israelis. There can be no equivocation about that. There are not two sides here.
“[President Joe Biden] is taking action to provide additional support to ensure that Israel ... has what they need to defend themselves,” the White House Press Secretary said.
Jean-Pierre's comments come a day after the US House of Representatives voted to censure Tlaib over her recent anti-Israel comments.
234 representatives voted to censure Tlaib, including 22 Democrats. 188 voted against censuring her. The move is largely symbolic.
Tlaib has been criticized by lawmakers on both sides of the aisle over her response to the war between Israel and Hamas, including a statement in which she accused the IDF of "bombing" a hospital in Gaza, which was actually hit by an Islamic Jihad rocket.
In a statement after Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, Tlaib criticized Israel’s alleged “apartheid system” and criticized the US for providing billions in funding “to support the apartheid government”.
She has refused to apologize or acknowledge fault in echoing the phrase "from the river to the sea," which she claimed represented Palestinian Arab freedom while instead of a call for Israel's extermination.
Tlaib has refused to condemn Hamas for the October 7 massacre and accuses Israel of committing genocide in defending itself from Hamas.
Last week, Tlaib released a video attacking US President Joe Biden for his support of Israel. The video features crowds of anti-Israel demonstrators chanting "From the river to the sea" and "no peace on stolen land." Tlaib vowed that Biden would face consequences for supporting Israel's right to self-defense in the 2024 presidential election.
