The US government believes a "major" missile or drone attack on Israel by Iran or its proxies is "imminent," officials told Bloomberg News. According to the report, the assessment is based on intelligence on Iran's intentions. Iran has vowed to retaliate for the assassination of senior Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) official Mohammad Reza Zahedi in Damascus last week, along with other IRGC members. A senior adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has threatened Israeli embassies abroad. Israel has been on high alert for a potential Iranian retaliation since the Damascus strike. A major attack by Iran or one of its proxies could significantly escalate the war between Israel and the Hamas terrorist organization, one such Iranian proxy, that began when Hamas massacred 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages on October 7, 2023. The latest report contradicts a report by CNN yesterday, according to which US officials believed that Iran would not target Israel directly in its retaliation for fear of provoking a strong response from both Israel and the US.
