A driver was arrested on Thursday after unsuccessfully trying to drive a car into barriers around a mosque in suburban Paris, local police said, according to The Associated Press.

The police department said in a statement that no one was hurt in the incident in Creteil south of Paris.

The reason for the driver's actions is unclear, but the incident happened as French religious sites and other public places remain under high security after a string of Islamic extremist attacks.

In late April, a terrorist murdered a police officer in an attack at the Champs Elysees in the French capital. The attack was later claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group.

That same month, French security services arrested two men accused of plotting an attack.

In March, French authorities arrested four members of a family as part of a preliminary investigation in connection with a plot to carry out an attack.

Other countries in Europe have come under attack as well, most notably Britain, where 22 people were killed in May in an explosion after an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

Earlier this month, three terrorists in a van drove into passengers on the London Bridge, then proceeded to stab people at the nearby Borough Market, where they were eliminated by security forces.

Two weeks after that combined attack, one person was killed and nine more injured after a van rammed a crowd of pedestrians near a mosque in London.
