Russia's defense ministry said on Tuesday night that 89 servicemen were killed in a Ukrainian attack on Makiivka in the Moscow-controlled parts of the Donetsk region. Russia previously said 63 Russian soldiers were killed.

The Russian ministry claimed the main reason for the New Year’s Eve attack was unauthorized use of mobile phones by the troops.
